he rides the wolds on his push-bike,
the old man and his dog
i’ve seen him up hills and down hills
the same old man and his dog
over the years through rain, in summer, winter and spring
the old man and his sweet, happy old dog
his dog once ran by his side as he cycled
that sweet old man and his dog
and when he grew tired, in a back-pack he placed him
the old man and his brave little dog
over the years through rain, in summer, winter and spring
the old man and his sweet, happy old dog
as I pass him I wave and often wonder
the story of the old man and his dog
where does he come from, where does he go to
that crazy old man and his dog
over the years through rain, in summer, winter and spring
the old man and his sweet, happy old dog
the years pass me by and I still see him
that very old man and his dog
now the dog rides in a trailer behind
the strong legs of the old man and his dog
over the years through rain, in summer, winter and spring
the old man and his sweet, happy old dog
and I know that one day I wont see them
either the old man or his dog
and I cried today when I saw them, tears for the the future of
the old man and his dog
and a chicken stew with Borlotti beans and caramelised onions to keep me warm and cheer me up…
I'm sitting here wondering what to have for dinner tonight – and there it is – chicken stew with borlotti beans, yum.
Isn't there a film you could watch to cheer yourself up? “All Dogs Go to Heaven” or something?
Mortality may seem a burden but life has no value without it. On a tangent, I actually wrote my university thesis on this subject – “Simone de Beauvoir's fear of death as seen in her essays and fiction”!!!
Stew looks fab, you can't beat meat and pulses in this weather.
oh cheer up Dom…I hope your casserole did the job…it looks like real comfort food…
Take care of yourself

Sometimes things just hit our hearts in an unexpected way. To me, being a dog lover, this spoke to me about the love of dog and his owner. Lovely post Dom. The stew also warms the heart for sure.
Had to Google borlotti beans. So I've learned something today. Being the “parent” of an old dog, the poetry was particularly poignant.
Lovely poem Dom. I'll just have to use Quorn fillets for the stew – which looks delicious. xx
I feel a bit tearful now…
Celia
(delicious looking chicken dish BTW)
But just think what a fantastic time they had, those two companions, the old man and his dog. All those walks and that love – no tears here, let's celebrate life today.
Food is a great way to celebrate and to comfort, your chicken stew hits the spot whatever the mood.
So poignant – thanks Dom.
Poetry AND chicken stew? I swoon…
As depressing as it was.. I love the poetry 🙂 But you are right.. that chicken stew could totally cheer me up at any point in time!
I din't find that poem depressing, it's full of the reward for devotion. GG
Dom! Loving the stew but not the glum you. Hope you cheer up soon.
A beautiful poem and post and without death there is no life…….but to get back to the stew, YES please, it looks wonderful and just the sort of comfort dish that we love….OH yes, I am on the Wolds, the Wolds in Yorkshire!
Thanks Dom.
Karen
Beautiful poem, although it reminded me that we are desperately hoping that neither of our dogs ever requires a 'trailer'.
The baked chicken looks wonderful.
wow is there some reason why everyone's doing poems lately? I don't mind though, I love reading them. and that chicken looks just gorgeous.
wait and i'm missing the point here, which is: cheer up, it'll all get better (: or go cook something, that always cheers me up. which you have done actually. x
I felt sad reading the end but the stew cheered my up. Looks delicious!
Now you've got me snivelling – what's all that about!
We lost a very good, old dog friend this past year but we keep the fond memories. Those memories still make us smile. Keep smiling!
Great looking chicken and beans!
